Happy New Year!

December was kind of a slow month due to the holidays and recuperating from NaNoWriMo. Now that it’s January it’s time to jump back onto the writing wagon.

Today’s exercise is a really simple one to start things off. (And it will come back around later.)

Make a list of 10 band names.

We had so much fun a few months ago with first lines I thought we could work on some more. Below are some first lines. Rewrite them to make them more engaging to hook the reader.

An alien zapped me with laser beams from his eyes.
I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of my hero.
Hail pelted the windows.
We were going to be rock stars at any cost.

We’re back to the regularly scheduled writing prompts so I thought today we’d try some flash fiction. Flash fiction tells a story with strong characters in approximately 1000 words or less.

So write about world domination in 850 words or less. Go!

Monday Writing Exercise

It’s Federal Tax Day in the United States which means people are filing late or running from the law like Wesley Snipes.

Take a character in a current piece of work and see how the person reacts to the law. Either have them taken into custody or find out they’re wanted by the authorities. You’ll really find out a lot about your character in this stressful situation.
