Monday Writing Exercise – 500 Words or Less

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

I’m late in posting Monday’s Writing Exercise.

So write about a bad habit in 500 words or less. Remember, it must have a beginning, a middle and an end to count as a short story.

Good luck!

How was your Writo de Mayo?

We’re back to the regularly scheduled writing prompts so I thought today we’d try some flash fiction. Flash fiction tells a story with strong characters in approximately 1000 words or less.

So write about world domination in 850 words or less. Go!

Monday Writing Exercise

Monday, April 18th, 2011

It’s Federal Tax Day in the United States which means people are filing late or running from the law like Wesley Snipes.

Take a character in a current piece of work and see how the person reacts to the law.  Either have them taken into custody or find out they’re wanted by the authorities.  You’ll really find out a lot about your character in this stressful situation.

Good luck,

Drabble Monday

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Happy Monday!

It’s now officially spring so the days are getting longer.  Let’s say goodbye to winter with a drabble.  What’s a drabble?  A drabble is a short story told in exactly 100 words.  That’s right.  100 words for a beginning, middle and end.

Good luck!

The First Line

Monday, March 14th, 2011

The First Line provides a first line for writers.  The editors pick the best short stories from the submissions to be published.

I challenge you to use the first line to write the best story you can and submit it.  The deadline is May 1st.

Good luck!

Don’t Always Go With the First Idea

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

Editors with a themed issue often have several submissions similar in nature.  That’s often because those writers ran with the first idea that popped into their heads.

So for this exercise, write down six statements or sentences based on the words given below then cross off the first three.  You can only write one of the last three ideas you had.

dog
oscar
madagascar
believe
dream

As always, you’re free to share your exercise results if you want.

Uninspiring First Lines

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The first line of your short story or novel can hook the reader into reading the rest.  Below are some rather uninspiring first lines.  Brainstorm/List new first lines that will catch your attention.  You can use this exercise as a way to limber your writing muscles before a writing session.

The locals say the house is haunted.
The frog jumped.
The shelves were empty.
I received a parking ticket.

Have fun!

Theme

Monday, January 24th, 2011

A lot of successful writing revolves around a theme. Once the writer has identified the theme of their work he or she can make word choices that punch it up for the reader.  It’s a subtle way to reinforce the theme.

So use the theme generator at Seventh Sanctum to come up with some new themes for your writing beyond “finding one’s self”.

If you found any themes inspiring, you’re welcome to share them.  Good luck!
