The Drawer

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

I’m late in posting Monday’s exercise. Earlier this month you made a list of 10 bands. Now make a list of 10 things you’d find in a drawer.

Monday Writing Prompt

Monday, August 29th, 2011

I’m a week late in posting my writing prompt for Monday. I hope you have fun with this one.

Write a story which involves a fortune teller machine. If you’re working on a novel, you can even write it into a scene.

Good luck!

Monday Prompt – Flash Fiction

Monday, June 6th, 2011

How was your Writo de Mayo?

We’re back to the regularly scheduled writing prompts so I thought today we’d try some flash fiction. Flash fiction tells a story with strong characters in approximately 1000 words or less.

So write about world domination in 850 words or less. Go!

Don’t Always Go With the First Idea

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

Editors with a themed issue often have several submissions similar in nature.  That’s often because those writers ran with the first idea that popped into their heads.

So for this exercise, write down six statements or sentences based on the words given below then cross off the first three.  You can only write one of the last three ideas you had.

dog
oscar
madagascar
believe
dream

As always, you’re free to share your exercise results if you want.

Character Exploration

Monday, September 20th, 2010

What happens when you put your character into a small, dark, enclosed space?  Think closet, coffin, cave, space hatch and so forth.  These are the times when your character cracks, finds courage or gets eaten by something.

Set your timer for 30 minutes and go!

wednesday writing prompt

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

A very late one again, work is the enemy of creativity…

What if you started to notice everyone around you beginning to act strangely? Why might they be doing so? If you want to write about a character rather than yourself, of course go ahead and fill your boots. Happy writing!

Try Not To Use The First Idea

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I’m sorry the Monday exercise is several days late.  I’ve been under the weather.

You’ll notice short stories picked for anthologies often have a central theme but aren’t obvious or direct interpretations.  So let’s try something new.

Pick one of the ideas below, write down 4 – 6 ideas and then write a short story using one of the latter ideas.

The Princess and the Sweet Pea
The Prince and the Frog
Seagulls and Rabbits
Moving Day

Good luck!

a late wednesday prompt

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Hello, sorry this is late.
This is a story starter, or an ender if you prefer. Again, feel free to change it if you see fit.
“There were two days left before the end of the world.”
Hope you enjoy it!

wednesday writing prompt

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Good afternoon! Today’s prompt is a “what if”. What if a mysterious letter, parcel or package was delivered to you or one of your characters? Who might have sent it? What might it contain? What would happen as a result? Happy imagining!

Wednesday writing prompt

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Hello everybody!
What if a character from something you’ve written turned up in your real life? Or, if you prefer, what if it were a character from something you’ve read? Why are they there? What will they do? How will it affect you?
